Those people lucky enough to have been at last Saturday’s sell out Celtic Connections concert in Glasgow will confirm that the evening went with a real swing. The Mitchell Library Theatre audience gave Ivan and his friends the warmest of welcomes.
Members of the Kirkwall City Pipe Band and the Orkney Song Shop joined Ivan and his five piece house band of top Orcadian musicians. They ran through a set list which ranged from Ivan’s earliest works through old favourites winding up with a Roy Orbison encore.
Ivan’s live recording of the 2016 Orkney Folk Festival Gathering is nearly ready for release on CD and will feature many of the arrangements played in Glasgow. Meanwhile here’s a taster from Saturday night….. “Keldabrae/Pumpkin Soup” featuring Mr Andy Cant on fiddle no less!
Ivan is appearing this Saturday (21st January) at Celtic Connections with his house band from the Orkney Gathering:
Originally staged at the 2016 Orkney Folk Festival to celebrate the 60th birthday of its eponymous star, Ivan Drever’s Orkney Gathering features a who’s-who of the islands’ folk and rock talent, joining forces on a career-spanning set of songs and tunes penned by this much-loved artist. Having started out as a teenager in the duo Knowe O’Deil before fronting Wolfstone as they rose to fame, Drever has a rich back catalogue to draw on and is joined for these lavish new arrangements by a six-piece house band, together with members of the Kirkwall Pipe Band and the Orkney Song Shop Choir.
