A live recording was made at the 2016 Orkney Folk Festival when Ivan was invited to get together a group of musicians to perform at “The Gathering”, an annual event in Orkney. This recording will be released on Ivan’s own Orcadian Recordings label in April 2017.
Recorded at Stromness Town Hall, the album features the Kirkwall City Pipe Band, The Orkney Song Shop Singers and a host of Orcadian musicians of note, including Andy Cant, Stewart Shearer, Iain Tait, Billy Peace, Graham Peace and Dylan Pepper. There are guest appearances by Hazel and Jennifer Wrigley and Colin J Nicholson.
It was a great honour for me to go back to a place I still regard as home and to perform with the cream of Orcadian musicians and some very good friends. We had a wonderful time.
In January 2017 the exercise was repeated with a sell out concert at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections. The album will be available in April 2017 via Ivan’s website and at Ivan’s live performances.
The full track listing is: Close it Down, Rose Of St Magnus, The Fisherman, Ivan Drever’s Compliments to the Kirkwall City Pipe Band, Waiting, Roll Over Stonehaven, Leaving Stoer, Brave Souls, The Dark Haired Ruby, Tall Ships, A Peedie Heart and Cleveland Park.
In the Autumn of 2016 Ivan published the “The Works Volume I”, a book containing the sheet music for 15 songs which span his musical career. A 15 track CD accompanies the book. The project came about following numerous requests from both fellow musicians and fans for “the dots” for some of Ivan’s most loved tunes.
Finally people can have the sheet music for old favourites from the days of Knowe O’Deil right through to recent songs such as “The Fisherman”, Wolfstone favourite “The Braes Of Sutherland” and Ivan’s greatest hit, “The Rose Of St Magnus”.
I can’t tell you the number of times I have been asked for the sheet music for my songs and tunes. Working with Sandy Stanage has meant that I can finally offer some of my work for people who wanted this. I’ve tried to showcase a wide selection from almost 30 year’s of recording.
Ivan continues to perform regularly across Europe featuring many of the songs from his extensive repertoire. Coming soon is a night in Glasgow as part of the Celtic Connections festival. Following the success of “The Gathering” in Kirkwall at the 2016 Orkney Festival the show was recreated at a sold out show in the Mitchell Library Theatre on 21st January 2017. “The Gathering” featured a who’s-who of the islands’ folk and rock talent, joining forces on a career-spanning set of songs and tunes. (Ivan was joined on stage for these lavish new arrangements by a six piece house band, together with members of the Kirkwall Pipe Band and the Orkney Song Shop Choir.) The event is recorded on the “Live In Orkney Album”.
Being able to bring the Gathering to Glasgow means that we can show off the musical talent from Orkney to yet another audience. It should be a magical night in one of my favourite venues
Ivan released “Revisited II” on May 1st 2016. The album features contributions by Leatherat’s fiddle player, Jono Watts and Iolair Sound Studios’, Stuart Shearer on guitars. “Revisited (The Wolfstone Songs)” was released in 2015 and covers songs and tunes originally recorded when Ivan was the frontman with acclaimed Scottish band Wolfstone. The tracks feature just Ivan and his guitar. Like Revisited II, the album was recorded in at Bainbridge studios in Edinburgh. Produced by Ivan, it was engineered, mixed and mastered by David Chisholm.
These re-workings are representative of how I now work as a solo performer. It’s been particularly satisfying to put them in a more intimate context, just me and my guitar. People seem to like it if recent audience reaction is anything to go by.
“What You Hear” is an album of songs featuring just Ivan’s guitar and Voice and was released in 2014. He used these songs as the core of his live shows during that year. Ivan released Volume 1 of “Music From The Vaults” a compilation of various recordings from over a decade in 2013. The thirteen tracks featured guest appearances by Charlie McKerron, Kris Drever and Jim Hunter alongside live tracks, out-takes and never before heard tracks by the band Clueless (with pipers Gordon Duncan and Ross Ainslie).
If anything I’m happier now working solo but the prospect of working alongside my friends from Orkney at the Gathering in Glasgow is a real treat, they are all such talented people and it is going to be a privilege to be on stage with them at Celtic Connections.
Ivan recorded “Keep On Keeping On” in Easter Ross in June of 2012. The album features 12 self penned songs and was released on Ivan’s own Orcadian recordings label. The 2011 album, “Bless The Wind” (also recorded in Easter Ross) featured former Wolfstone band mate, Andy Murray on electric guitar as well as Paul Eastham, Keyboard player with Coast. It was released on September 1st 2011. Ivan’s 2010 album, “Notes From an Island”, on Attic records, was a reflection on his Orcadian heritage.
